Hey again, kids. I’m back from another eventful evening of pushing, shoving, crowd-surfing, chanting, and scene kids who really hate the immediate empty space around them, and I’ve brought back a goodie-bag of lexical goodness to you guys. Thrash And Burn 2010 created a bit of disdain among the metal community mainly because of the lineup. If you didn’t know, last year’s lineup was pretty solid in the eyes of the masses. DevilDriver headlined with support from Emmure, Despised Icon, Veil Of Maya, and Periphery, among others. At least it had some Thrash. When this year’s lineup was announced, however, the reception was mixed. People whined about how “hot topic” bands were playing and that there was no real Thrash bands playing. Well, I have three words in relation to the nay-say: Get over it- because Thrash And Burn 2010 will flatten you.
Show: Thrash And Burn Tour 2010, State Theatre, St. Petersburg, FL
Crowd: Your basic crowd here. Good mix of the death-metallers and the “scene” kids. There was some taunting from the latter group about, you guessed it, hardcore dancing, but all-in-all it was friendly and there were no real fights. They gave a naturally killer reaction to each band, and none had any trouble getting people to move. However, during Born Of Osiris’ set, the pit was nothing short of a human cesspool of pure eff-you-up. I’m 5’9, 160lbs and I probably would have gotten destroyed. I’m pretty sure a Hot Topic closed down during that set.
Bands: I observed every band who played minus Kittie and Asking Alexandria. Explanation below.
Ovid’s Withering: A local “epic tech metal” (Sort of like Winds Of Plague) project opened up, and actually weren’t bad live. Sound was a bit cluttered, and they could have worked on their stage presence a bit more, as standing still while waving your hair in a pinwheel gets a bit old sometimes. 3 out of 5.
Holly Maddux: Another local opener, this dual-vocalist six-piece really impressed me. Phenomenal stage presence matched with a punishing sound brought the house to it’s knees. Musically, the tracks were quite satisfying as well, and it even came with a freaking trumpet solo. Props to guitarist Billy who’s reckless stage antics reminded me of toned-down Dillinger Escape Plan performances. Potential is dripping from this St. Pete group. 4 out of 5.
Chelsea Grin: On to the big names! Triple-guitarist Chelsea Grin came through the venue like a wrecking ball, their sound crushing and performance tight. Didn’t really expect such a refined live show from them, but was proven wrong. 4 out of 5.
Motionless In White: First of the “Hot Topic” bands unveiled a shocker with a massive performance. However, they sound much, much heavier live than they do on album, and to fans of the CD sound, this isn’t a good thing. For me, though, the change was for the better and quite entertaining. Two band members wearing eye liner, however, was not, but I digress. 3.5 out of 5.
Periphery: In the words of Stick To Your Guns, if Periphery isn’t your new favorite band, we need to talk. I can’t say anything bad about this performance, the sound was heavy, thick, and easy to hear. Misha is an absolute monster on electric guitar, and even the vocals sounded great live. 4.5 out of 5.
Greeley Estates: With Hot Topic band number two also comes surprise number two. As much as I dislike the image, the band put on a rock solid performance. Stage presence was top notch, and their live sound quite powerful and intricate. Only one complaint: the vocals were a bit underpowered. Other than that, great job. 3.5 out of 5.
Impending Doom: Christian Deathcore outfit Impending Doom brought the first heart-stopping performance of the night. Unbelievably heavy and filled with energy, it’s right up there with some of the best performances I’ve seen. On a milldly unrelated note, vocalist Brook Reeves could be one of the nicest guys I have ever met. We talked for a bit between sets out back, and I was amazed. 5 out of 5.
Evergreen Terrace: First disappointment of the night, the band’s sound was cluttered and unintelligible. Their energy level was pretty meh as well, nothing really exiting about this performance. 2 out of 5.
Stick To Your Guns: Ho. Ly. Crap. If I could break up the word “crap” for more emphasis, I would. STYG has a near perfect live sound, matched with endless amounts of energy and fused with their powerful message of hope over hate, this act stole the best in show award without a doubt. Also, as Jen reads this, she is plotting a way to make me suffer, as they are one of her all-time favorites. I even bought the shirt she wants. Whoops. 5 out of 5.
Born Of Osiris: The cream of the “Sumeriancore” crop and coming in a close second to STYG, BOO’s live show is pure back-breaking, merciless power. So much power, in fact, that I felt the urge to put my camera down and sprint from sidestage to onstage and proceed to front flip into the crowd. I was told by their merch-manager later on that I was a “crazy sonofa”. Of course, being me, I knocked my head on something and ended up bleeding, but it was worth it. Welcome to life as Anthony, enjoy your clumsiness.
Asking Alexandria and Kittie: Here’s the deal, I left before AA went on, as it was like 11 o’clock and I had to get my friend home, and Kittie’s tour bus broke down. What are you gonna do, sue me?
The Bottom Line: Like I said, if you didn’t go because the lineup wasn’t to your liking, it was seriously your loss. Thrash And Burn was awesome, pure and simple. Next up, the Bleeding Through tour on Sept. 11. See you there.

I wish stuff like this came to Sweden… This sounds so awesome in so many ways. Last time we had a show with a pretty decent lineup was two years ago. And now another one in November. I moving to the States…

I'll be at the Pittsburgh show for this tour on Thursday, and I'm beyond excited for it.
The whole main lineup, other than Evergreen Terrace, who I never really sat and listened to, are all bands I crank on many different occasions.
This is gonna be amazing, I can't wait
Also, I can tell you that Asking Alexandria would've probably been a 3.5-5 out of 5 for you, Danny is a great vocalist and did wonderful the last time those boys rolled through Pittsburgh, I hope the same happens on Thursday!
Thanks for the review Anthony, you got me even more pumped

Not to get off topic, but Deep Blue definitely showed me how PWD can transform. Not just over the course of writing and going from album to album, but also their difference in each song. Like, going from Deadweight to Alone, two systematically different songs, just shows how masterful they are at writing and their style.
Hence why they're my #1 band right now, MMI being #2

"The vocals are Suicide Silence to a tee, with annoyingly high screeching growls and very low gutturals spewing the lyrics forth. It’s just a shame that the high screeches are so damn annoying. I didn’t like it when Suicide Silence did it and I certainly don’t like it now. I’ve heard cats howl less annoyingly than this."

Chelsea Grin is kind of annoying because of the annoying pig squeals, Jen's right.
But Mitch's high register scream is perfect, IMO, for that type of scream.
That said, I may be the first person in this thread to say I wouldn't care for this tour..
I don't even really like Impending Doom, because of the boring vocals.:/ , but if I were to go at all, it would be for Periphery (who are OK, but certainly not something I listen to regularly) , Born of Osiris (OK deathcore, but again, would never listen to them regularly..kind of boring) or Impending Doom (thoughts above).
Enjoyed the review, though. Good Job, Anthony.

In my sincere, most honest opinion, I think the allure regarding Asking Alexandria all boils down to scene-anything.
Scene girls who are waiting for a man they're too afraid to ask out. Scene girls who say, "my life sucks", but they live in uptown neighborhoods. Scene girls who think nobody gets them… but Asking Alexandria does.
With their dark composure and they way their lyrics deal with material things, hardly dealing with real "feelings" (because, hey, feelings are for wimps) really speak to the typical scene girl.
So, really, the only people who will really like them are the people *coughscenegirlscough* who think that they have something appealing to say. They don't.
I agree with Paul though, they have a pretty decent sound.

Paul Patterson replied:

I agree with this about 99%.
The only confusing part to me is, what do scene kids have in common with following the actions of a serial killer named Mr. Brooks? Lord knows they're all pussies and couldn't cut their way through a peanut butter and jelly sandwich :p haha.

I didn't know they were a scene band. People just through their name into the mix while I was talking about Born of Osiris with some friends, and they're on Sumerian so I was like, cool, I'll give 'em a shot. But their music is boring and I'd say their songs are pretty poorly written. On top of that, I don't like the clean vocals. They're way too generic and I've literally heard them a hundred times before.
And apparently since they throw some cool electro-tunes into their music they're being innovative. Nah, not buying that.

I think Ovid's Withering deserved more than a 3.. they were heavy as hell and with the technicalities of their songs, its probably hard for them to jump around and not mess up a riff, and to me the stage presence isn't that important if your songs are epic and you don't act like douchebags. Just my opinion: but they really are the best local Tampa band. I really enjoy HMX, too – but to rate them higher than OW makes very little sense to me.
Just my $0.02

I went to the Atlanta T&B at the Masquerade…idk I seem to have felt a bit differently than you about it.
Chelsea Grin…I was totally unimpressed. 3 guitarists…yet it felt like their whole set was one long simple breakdown. I just couldn't get into it. I wasn't a fan of the vocals either.
Motionless In White annoyed me. They cranked the bass up to ridiculous levels to hide their lack of talent in my opinion. I think they would be better with a different vocalist. The whole shout/scream he does gets under my skin.
Periphery did fantastic imo. The crowd wasnt into it at all until Icarus Lives! hit 4 songs into their 5 song set. Another issue I had was that Spencer's vocals were drowned out the whole time. I know every song and even i had a hard time figuring out what he was singing.
Greeley Estates impressed me. I really enjoyed their set. The bass was a bit underwhelming compared to their album however. Nice dudes too.
Impending Doom lit it up. I wasn't expecting it to be so…explosive. Fantastic.
Evergreen Terrace bored me to death. I stood in the back so I could rest for the mosh and save my hearing.
Stick To Your Guns surprised me as well. I'd listened to them but they're not my style really. But the crowd was into it and it was a tight set. Thumbs up.
Kittie….yeah. Not much I want to say about that.
Born Of Osiris was amazing. I worked my way up front for this one. Ronnie honest to God seems insane sometimes. Just the look on his face. And joe has got to be the most energetic keyboardist ive ever seen.
This is where I had trouble. I'd seen Asking Alexandria at the Masquerade before…the second time around was boring for me. It's their attitudes. Their schtick gets old. You guys like to party. The ignorant scene girls want you. We get it. We're just here for the music though. Danny spent like 10 minutes on stage chatting up the crowd and surveying the females and chugging smirnoff on stage. It was around that time that I got annoyed and left.

So I went to the Pittsburgh Thrash N Burn last night, and this review is pretty much a mirror image of that exact show.
The biggest difference was that this was Steel City Music Festival, so there was a TON of local talent before hand. But that only made it better, a lot of great music was played
I didn't get a chance to talk to Brook Reeves but I did shake his hand after their set, and you can tell he's just the coolest and nicest dude on the planet. Even during their set in between songs, just the way he talked to the crowd, it showed how cool he was. Seems like sort of a contradiction haha.
He even said after their last song, More Than Conquerors I think, he said "Listen everyone. I don't care if you hate ME, I don't care if you hate the message of my band, I respect you for coming out tonight, and I love you all for being here to share this wonderful night, with so much talent surrounding us all."
That's a big thing to say in front of hundreds of people.
The show was pure amazingness, I'll leave it at that, despite that amazingness isn't even a word haha.

Also, I forgot to mention, since I'm so tired, that Chelsea Grin wasn't there due to Alex breaking his jaw.
And believe it or not, Kittie wasn't half bad, they rocked the hell out of the place!
And Asking Alexandria was a great performance overall. But I was disappointed to see that Danny, their vocalist, wasn't nearly as into the music as he was at the last show I saw him at, which was the Artery Foundation Across The Nation Tour. He was bouncing all over the place and showing intensity at that show.
This time, however, it was painfully clear that he was stoned of his ass. And his performance just didn't have it's explosion. But, the band's intensity as a whole made up for it.
Also, my buddy Brad who played for one of the local bands last night, told me that Evergreen Terrace was being terribly belligerent towards people last night, apparently they started a fight with one of HIS friends and pushed his friend's girlfriend onto the gravel. Talk about unnecessary :/

This review is from a while ago but I'm just seeing it now as I sit in school bored to death browsing, so I've decided to put my two cents in.
I went to Thrash and Burn when they stopped on Long Island, New York just a few towns away from me. It was a really small venue which was the worst decision EVER. I left early because it was so ridiculous and it was nearly impossible to get inside as people were spilling out the doors. I HAD to be inside for STYG though just because I, like Jen, am completely hooked on them. Even though it was a waste for me to be there overall, I am sososo happy that I got to see STYG. Their set was amazing and had so much heart put into it. I'm waiting for them to come here again at a better venue so I can actually get into the crowd so everyone can watch a 5 foot, 100lb. girl fuck shit up hahaha. This was a great review though.
