From New York City, comes a four-piece band ready to take up the ranks in the metal scene by the name of The Resurrection Sorrow. Having never heard of these guys, I wasn’t really sure what to expect with their Hour of the Wolf cd. Would I like it? Is it even my kind of music? Well, let’s get into it.

I popped the cd in, and right away on “Resurrect the Sorrow,” I was blown out of my seat by the thick groove of the opening guitar riff! It’s heavy, raw, and flat out fat! After a few bars of this killer guitar riff, Alex Dementia’s vocals kick in. And, with that, I first thought of Corrosion of Conformity, and even a little bit of Down. Now, I’m not the strongest fan of vocals like these, but I strapped in, and figured I’d ride it out to give it a fair chance. I’m glad I did just that, because this entire album really grew on me. Lots of heavy riffs, and despite not loving these type of vocals, it actually works. “Resurrect the Sorrow’s” groove carries you throughout the entire song, and it’s a pretty fun ride.

“Unholy Divine” opens up with a thundering drum section that definitely got my heart racing for a solid metal fix, and the song delivered. Dementia’s vocals flow right along with the song which definitely has a “stoner-metal” sound. Again, not necessarily my favorite genre of metal, but didn’t take away from my enjoyment of Hour of the Wolf.

One thing about this album that I came to realize is that, while it’s not ground-breaking in originality, it definitely stands on its own. I could really see this being a perfect fit for just about any metalhead’s music collection.

Lots of thick crunchy grooves, teamed up with an incredible rhythm section, and almost hypnotic vocals really show off the musicianship of The Resurrection Sorrow. The beats are like thunder, and the guitar riffs could fill a room with their thickness. There’s a sense of aggression in the music that never really lets up throughout the entire album, which was actually refreshing to me. In some ways, The Resurrection Sorrow and their Hour of the Wolf album helped “stoner-metal” gain a little respect in my mind.

I really couldn’t complain about the production quality of the music either. This type of music has always sounded a little drowned out to me, but I didn’t really notice that much on this album, and I was able to pick out each individual aspect of the music clearly.

“Buried Dreams” is all kinds of cool. Brutal, heavy guitar riffs throughout the song really kept the momentum going in a good direction. This actually brings up a pretty solid testament to the cd. I was never really bored by the transition from one song to the next. Each song delivers its own fresh sound, which I was pretty stoked about. Often times, this type of metal all sounds the same. Not the case here though. Each song goes in its own direction, while keeping the band’s sound in tact.

Overall, I liked this album quite a bit. I would warn against purchasing it if you’re not a fan of Corrosion of Conformity (or that type of music), as there are definite similarities. That said, however, it’s a solid album, and definitely deserves a listen. Who knows? Maybe, it’ll even turn you on to this type of sound, as to an extent, it did for me.
