From Athens, Greece comes a six-piece metal band by the name of The Fallen Within, and with them they bring their debut album, Intoxicated. Having not heard anything about them before listening to this album, I sat down, put the record on (so to speak), and did a little research on them. After learning more about the band and hearing the entire cd, did I like what I heard?
Well, before I answer that question, let’s talk about it for a bit. Alright, first off The Fallen Within is a bit hard to pin down, in terms of metal genre. It’s a little bit screamo, a little bit metalcore, and a little bit melodic metal. These three elements, with a ton of atmospheric effects thrown in, left me a little confused about what I’m actually listening to. Don’t get me wrong, I like bands that mix up the genres a bit, but Intoxicated left me a little perplexed in terms of what to think. I could definitely appreciate many aspects of the music, and would definitely have to give credit to all of the members in regards to musicianship. The problem with this album, for me, is that there’s almost too much going on. Throwing different elements of metal, all at the same time, had my head spinning.
As stated earlier, the musicianship is top notch, and The Fallen Within are truly a talented group of guys. There were several aspects of the album that I did enjoy. For example, there are some great guitar riffs throughout the cd, and some pretty tight grooves when the guitars and rhythm section were playing in sync. All that said, though, I just felt that nothing really stood out. Despite maybe being a little different from some other bands, it just didn’t come off all that original. Not to mention, The Fallen Within’s sound sounded a little dated, as if it might have come out a few years ago.
I don’t want to completely dog on the album, though, because it really wasn’t a terrible debut album. It’s just kind of a lackluster effort at this point. And while I’m sure the band worked hard on it, I just think that the guys should refine their sound a little, and they could really take off. There are some pretty solid metal moments in the album, and some pretty killer, brutal guitar riffs, but I would definitely recommend a listen before you spend any money on this one.
