The Browning – The Browning
Ah, metal music and its many, many faces. Combining styles is basically normalcy in today’s music and can sometimes come at the band’s expense. Mixing hardcore, emo, thrash, death and grind (just to name a few) together can create some interesting styles and sounds, but it doesn’t always translate well. Hell, I have even seen seafood (yep that’s right, “creatures of the deep”) thrown into the mix with Attack Attack and their interesting subgenre known as “crabcore.” And now The Browning are here to throw their proverbial hat into the mix to see if they can separate themselves from the pack. Former As Blood Runs Black vocalist Jonny McBee not only fronts the band, but also finds himself behind the board producing the band’s self-titled debut album. Having been a full band no more than three months, will these Texans be able to hang with the big boys or find themselves standing on the edge of oblivion?
The album gets things going with “Standing On The Edge” and “Dazed”. The opening electronics of “Standing On The Edge” sound like they could have come straight from any Ibiza nightclub or underground rave scene. Let me tell you, these beats hit harder than a sleep over at Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva’s house. Battering guitars fill your braincase, while ravaging drums, mind warping electronics and raging vocals pound you into nothingness. Imagine the annihilation that would take place if The Acacia Strain met Paul Oakenfold in a dark alley, and the result would be “Standing On The Edge”. “Dazed” incorporates blasting beats, surging guitars and McBee’s hell-fueled guttural attack with beautiful Cradle Of Filth-style keyboard backdrops. It’s an incredible majestic sound that will shake you to your inner core.
One thing I would like to point out is just how fantastic this record sounds. To self-produce a record on little-to-no budget is one thing; but to also make it sound as good as this one is another thing entirely. The guitar tone is thick and meaty, the drums are rock solid (with the occasional 808 for that extra punch), and the vocals are tight and fit squarely into the mix, never sounding too out front or buried. Usually when bands use 808 accents on albums, the kit becomes less about the drums and more about the accents. However, that’s not the case here. McBee found the perfect combination of kit and accents to create an absolutely devastating sound. If I have one gripe, it would be that the bass needs be brought up a notch or two. It seems a tad bit underwhelming, but never takes away from the band’s crushing sensibilities.
The decimation continues with songs like “Judgment”, “A Better Way” and “Suit and Tie.” Once again, “Judgment” features beautifully crafted keyboard work that is intertwined with plundering double bass and totally assaulting vocal work. The scalding verses are always on the attack quickly turning into dismantling slow grooves that mash you into pieces. Angelic keys run behind the brutality making this song cataclysmically epic. “A Better Way” sees The Browning take a step out of their comfort zone to try their hand at a catchy chorus. Now mind you, this is extremely subtle but it works and shows just how eclectic these guys are. “Suit and Tie” is a behemoth track that combines the slower grooves of The Acacia Strain with atmospheric keys and Molotov Solution-style breakdowns. You better stretch out your neck before listening to this track because you’ll need to be prepared for some serious headbanging.
Even with only a short time under their belt, The Browning have managed to write and record one of this year’s best albums to date. This isn’t just any other record- it’s an experience of gigantic proportions. Simply put, the soundtrack to the apocalypse has arrived.

This band is another of those fairly hidden gems we've uncovered, though we can't take all the credit. An awesome visitor suggested we check out the band. Whoever that visitor was, thank you! This is certainly an awesome album and quite honestly, unlike anything I've heard.
The review is great as well!

I've chosen people that have a passion for music. I have picked a WIDE variety of people (from professional writers in the industry, current musicians to young up and coming writers) who I believe have open minds and are willing to put personal bias and BS aside to give fair and accurate reviews. You have to remember man, you do not have to agree with everything you see. A review is just that, a persons personal opinion…so take it as that. Hopefully you can peek around and find something that you can agree on.
). I know a lot of sites out there that couldn't care less what you think….regardless of which side your on….WE DO!
P.S. Honestly, ALL of us here at the site are fans of heavy music first, people of industry second. So when we respond, we do so with great passion and respect for what we believe in. At least we take the time to respond (yes even to haters

Wondering about our name?
Some are confused by our band name. Others are downright opposed to it. There are those that love the name and those that hate it. We feel that our name stands out and and can be remembered whether they like the name or not.
Whichever side of the fence you're on, the name "The Browning" seems to have people wondering, "What does it mean?!" Well, there is no easy answer. But first, what is a band name? It's just a name right? A word to label something with? Of course we could have chosen an incredibly generic name like As The Black Flame Burns Beneath Us or Fear Before The Falling Autumn or Ashes Of The Ones Who Shall Die…I think you get the point. The truth is a band's name is open to interpretation. It may mean something different to each person who sees or hears it.
If you're having trouble coming up with your own idea of what The Browning means to you, here are some different ways could interpret the name:
1. John Browning was a prolific weapons designer who designed The Browning machine gun. He designed some of the biggest and baddest guns the world has ever seen.
2. Browning is the process of becoming brown, especially referring to food. Browning foods may be desirable, as in caramelization, or undesirable, as in an apple turning brown after being cut.
3. Refering to number 2, you could look at society as a piece of fruit…and that fruit is browning. The Browning of Society.
4. Places: Browning, Illinois, Browning, Montana, Browning, Wisconsin, Browning, Missouri, Browning Hill, in Brown County, Indiana; sometimes called Browning Mountain, Browning, Saskatchewan, Canada
5. People: Alan Browning, English actor
Christopher Browning, American historian focusing on the Holocaust
Elizabeth Barrett Browning, English poet
Emily Browning, Australian actor
Frederick Browning, English World War II lieutenant general
George L. Browning (1867–1947), American justice
George Browning (bishop) (1942–), Anglican Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn
Greg Browning, Australian field hockey player
John Browning, American firearms inventor
Jonathan Browning, the American pioneer and firearms inventor
Kurt Browning, Canadian skater
Kurt S. Browning, Florida politician
Martin Browning, Professor of economics
Maurice Browning, English actor
Miles Browning, American World War II rear admiral
Robert Browning, English poet
Tod Browning, horror movie pioneer
Val A. Browning, American firearms inventor and industrialist
Browning Mummery (tenor) (1888–1974), Australian opera singer
Browning Ross, Olympian and father of long distance running in the United States
So in conclusion, I leave you with some famous band names and how they came to be…
BEASTIE BOYS – According to Michael Diamond, BEASTIE stands for Boys Entering Anarchistic Stages Towards Internal Excellence.
WEEZER – Band member Rivers Cuomo had the nickname Weezer in school because of a breathing problem.
SQUIRREL NUT ZIPPERS – an oddly titled type of candy.
PINK FLOYD – taken from the names of two Georgia bluesmen Pink Anderson and Floyd Council – from the early days when the band saw itself as a blues band.
PANTERA – Spanish for Panther and also a pretty cool car.
LL COOL J – for "Ladies Love Cool James".
DMX – Dark Man X
CHUMBAWAMBA – In a band member's dream, he didn't know which door to use in a public toilet because the signs
said "Chumba" and "Wamba" instead of "Men" and "Women"
So I guess The Browning ain't so bad. You're welcome.
Noah "Shark" Robertson, drummer for The Browning.

These guys have successfully made a debut LP, and have done a good job of holding their own and rising in popularity. I myself purchased a copy of their album. The whole album is not too bad. I really enjoyed the instrumental track no. 5 "Inner Mission", coming in with the thunder and then easing in with soothing melodies. Also "These Nightmares" track no. 9 is pretty brutal, and the intro is epic.
The style is pretty cool, and the effort put into all of this is impressive. and I respect the fact that they have done all of their own recording, and production, because I too record and produce with home studio equipment.
However to be fair and honest, I disagree with the opinion about the production of this album in the review. I think these guys show some talent and alot of potential and I commend them for their efforts, but I believe the mixing and mastering could have been much better.
Really clear and balanced EQ, & Compression seems to be lacking a little, and I believe could have been better in these tracks. Yet, I do have faith in these guys that they will improve, just as I have learned so much more about recording and mixing since my bands EP was released recently. This is a learning process, and if your not paying someone else to do your stuff, you gotta start learning how to do it yourself. Major props to Jonny McBee for doing that.
I look forward to hearing more material from these guys. Much respect to everyone involved.

No problem. You guys did a good job producing your album, and I've even spoken briefly with one of you guys on myspace like a year or two ago before you got big. My band is Proclaim The Sky, which used to be "Wolf Dragoons" which was stupid, lol.
I can't help but feel a little jealous that you have made it so far when I can remember when you guys were kinda in the same position my band is now, not really being recognized by many people, but having potential beyond what people think. Congratulations for "making it".
Some things I would suggest for production quality would be to make sure your EQ is tight on every single individual track and that they all sound good before mixing them all into a single stereo track. Also it is better to remove than to add when your EQing. I would suggest using limiter on all the individual tracks as well. Also I would be very precise when using compression and make sure your track is "banging" and packs a lot of punch, but don't over compress it or it will make everything worse.
ALSO
Stereo guitar, panned hard left and hard right is an absolute must regardless of opinion, that is my absolute blunt advice, take it or leave it =P haha.
good job
I want to hear more in the future.

Heard these guys for the very first time with "Standing on the Edge" leading off the TNR "Sounds to Destroy the Masses". Incredible. I'll be replaying that one track alone for days.
