Lost Dreams – Wage of Disgrace
Is it just me or does there seem to be an increasing usage of keyboards in today’s “metal” scene? Well, at least on Lost Dreams’ Wage of Disgrace they use them in more of a black metal way, while incorporating metalcore riffs, some triplets here and there, and some qualities of modern deathcore with the vocals. The thing I liked most about this album, which is the fourth from the Austrian five piece, is that it’s very catchy – almost as catchy as the latest flu.
For the most part, I personally enjoyed the growling and the riffage. The drums are well placed, and showcases Rafael Peychar’s amazing drum style. There are some grand blast beats on the album, along with other somewhat memorable moments. You’ll find some good breakdowns, but the album also has its share of typical, run of the mill sections as well. These guys kinda remind me of All That Remains (riff wise), while vocally, Stefan Traunig throws in some modern deathcore with a small bit of old school death metal. You can tell he certainly listened to some Obituary and Deceased when he was a kid.
The album’s title track is by far my favorite, because it has everything that I want in a good song. It incorporates catchy vocals, a great bridge, amazing guitar work, and I LOVE how the guitar and drums collide. If you only listen to one song by this band, make sure it’s “Wage of Disgrace”.
The ending of track five, “Lies”, is definitely one you should check out. The sound clip used lets you know why the song was given its title, and from this, I’d say this band is definitely making a political statement. Political lyrics aren’t really my style, but to be blunt, these guys come off as the System of a Down of deathcore.
In the end, Lost Dreams could be more original, but I can understand that they’re trying to make a break. All in all, I would recommend you listen to Wage of Disgrace before you buy.
