Godsmack – The Oracle
If I’m being honest, rarely ever does an album interest me after just one listen. Godsmack’s fifth studio album, The Oracle, was no exception. These giants of hard rock (speaking purely of their popularity rather than their stature, obviously) have a career than spans more than a decade, but you’ll find the same song writing formulas on The Oracle as you did their previous efforts, and as far back as their self-titled album released in 1998.
Admittedly, I was a big fan of Godsmack several years ago, and I believe they were an instrumental part of the process of cutting my musical teeth, so to speak; however, I think I grew out of their sound. At least I did some growing, because they, as a band, never really have. They subscribe to the philosophy that “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Evolution is simply not on this band’s agenda.
If you’re familiar with Godsmack and their previous albums, then you basically know what you’re doing to get with The Oracle. Lots of tribal drum patterns, copy and paste guitar solos, and fairly cheesy, over-the-top lyrics. Lyrically the album is fueled by anger, aggression, hostility, demons, religion…blah blah blah. I had numerous moments while listening to the album where I thought, “Hey, that sounds a lot like ‘<insert Godsmack song title here>’ from <insert Godsmack album name here>.” The only variation you really get musically is from the harmonica in “Devil’s Swing”, piano in “Love, Hate, Sex, Pain”, and strings in the album’s title track. But that being said, there’s no denying the band’s ability to write catchy songs. While the album didn’t interest me much initially, after a couple of listens, I would wake up with certain songs stuck in my head.
The album opens with its first single, “Cryin’ Like A Bitch”, which is loud, aggressive and angry. Appropriately, the video for the track features a bunch of testosterone-fueled dudes from the UFC beating each other down. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love to watch people get pummeled? There’s not much depth to the song, but still, it works.
Another noteworthy song is “Love-Hate-Sex-Pain”. While I must admit, I’ve never really heard the resemblance in Sully Erna’s vocals to those of Layne Staley (Alice in Chains), one listen to this song changed my mind. The layered vocals are so reminiscent of Staley and Jerry Cantrell’s harmonies that it’s downright haunting. Add to that, the piano “outro” mixed in with the vocals and it’s enough to give any Alice in Chains fan goosebumps.
The album ends with a six minute twenty-two second instrumental. Yes, you read that right – it ends with an instrumental. What a great way to kill the momentum built from the rest of the album. The song does add an interesting dynamic, but would have been better placed a few tracks earlier. It offers up lots of riffing, Metallica style, while incorporating some beautiful string work.
I never expected to like The Oracle, but I have to admit that it really grew on me. Fans of Godsmack will most likely love it. Fans of mainstream hard rock might find it’s worth their time to check out the album. Metalheads, well…who am I kidding? You’ve already made up your mind.

This is hilarious! Lee that last response is priceless. Godsmack fans are so ridiculous. Godsmack are sub par musicians (beside Shannon) that have cashed in over the years due to mindless idiots like these people. I gave up on these hacks a long time ago. Let them keep buying these horrible cds and bitching that it sucks. Stupid asses!

You fanboy types are the worst. Yeah, this entire site sucks because YOU disagree with the review. These kinds of comments kill me. Godsmack has been the same from day one. The might as well release the same album over and over with a new cover and title.
Okay, you disagree with the review? That's totally cool. We welcome difference of opinion with open arms and diverse taste is what makes everyone unique. Telling us that we don't know anything about music because the majority of our site's writers dislike this album is just crap. So what should we do, praise this album based on the simple fact that Godsmack has gotten loads of radio airplay and has sold a lot of records? We would basically be catering to the Godsmack fanbase and not basing our review on our personal opinion. That would be a waste of time.
I'm sure it would really go over well with you if I went to your house, told you your entire album collection sucks and that you have the worst taste in music ever. Give me a break. People like that should be lumped in with all of the fanboys and girls that posted whiney comments in the latest HIM album review.

Daryn you are exactly right. If you just catered to their fanbase like most sites do, then your doing an injustice. Im not a fan of the band at all but based on the review, I think im going to check the cd out. Its fair and well written to say the least. I think a 3.5 is more than fair.
[Reply to this comment]
May 1st, 2010 at 10:21 pm
Also, you guys do realize that the album received a 3.5, right? That's 3.5 our of 5 and you guys are complaining. 3.5 isn't that bad of a rating. In fact, I think Jen was fair with her review. You guys act like it received a 1 out of 5 or something. If you guys think this album should get a perfect 5/5 just because it's a Godsmack album, then your perspective on music is really skewed.
Instead of crying about this review, why don't you guys venture outside of your safe, radio-friendly zone and go check out some of the metal album reviews. You might just find something that appeals to you and realize that we know a thing or two about music (despite your assumption that we don't know anything). Run along now.

Though I don't COMPLETELY agree with the review, there is no doubt godsmack stick to the same formula. The guitar solos are extremely repetative as well. With that said, I found this album to be a better effort than their last two. I am pleased with the album.

Wow, I'm so glad everyone appreciates my FAIR and UNBIASED review.
And no, "LOL" we didn't download the album from somewhere. If you actually knew anything about music (other than just popular rock played on the radio), you would know that we've reviewed albums that you won't be able to find anywhere else…albums that won't be released until months from now. But go ahead and believe what you want. I know a fanatic when I see one, and you can't change a fanatic's opinion.
I didn't bash the album. Just wait until it gets reviewed by another metal site that isn't so friendly to radio rock. They'll rip it a new one. I'm certain of it. I was generous in my review. Go listen to some real music like The Ghost Inside, As I Lay Dying, As Hell Retreats, Upon A Burning Body….
Be a bit more open-minded. You might benefit from getting out of your little mainstream box.

Yeah, we went out of our way to steal a crappy album so we could write a fair and unbiased review of it. That makes about as much sense as your vacuous comments.

You really are as stupid as you seem. By the way, if you know SO much about the album, how did you hear it exactly? Doesn't matter. You are still listening to an illegal copy of an album, end of discussion. If you were to listen to this album (or any other bands album) and not like it, you probably wouldn't buy it as well as tell others not to buy it. Correct? Then you are doing the band just as much injustice as you would if you were to have put it up there yourself. I'm tired of messing with you anyway. I'm sure its probably bed time for you anyway. Mommy needs to put your jammies on and tuck you into your bed. That's pretty sad considering you'll probably be drawing social security in a few years.

First off I will start by saying that a review of a record that isn't even out yet is well stupid. You went to godsmack's site went on iheartradio who has some tracks for preview. Didn't listen to all the tracks and that isn't even all the record. As a musician I call foul right there if you don't have the patience to actually review the record. Instead go to a site listen to some tracks and sorry but unbiased review my ass. The whole section of likes and dislikes of the band not the record. No objectivity at all trying to sound music savvy by naming genres. Just like every idiot who thinks because they have ears they are a music critique. My review: I don't know because I haven't heard the full record.

but why not accept other peoples regardes on the album? everyone has its personal taste in music… For me the new album has the most "best" songs one single godsmack had for me. JJ your as much of a dumbass as the other guy. You review an album before its out to get people talking about it once way or the other. If they reviewed it after it was out, then what is the point, right? By then, people have already bought it and formed their own opinion. Also, just because they didn't review EVERY song means nothing. You people are SO simple minded its unbelievable. Just because she picked out certain songs and then just made a synopsis doesn't mean they haven't heard the album. You people are so damn delusional! You have the mindset that "Since she didn't give the album a higher score or talk more about individual songs, means she has not heard the album as a whole." is just plain ridiculous! Take a look at other reviews on the site and you will notice, simpleton, that all of them are done that way. I'm not even on the staff and this stuff pisses me off! Another thing, "the new album has the most "best" songs one single godsmack had for me?" What the hell is that? You people are grown ass adults and you speak/type this way? It shows your education skills or should I say lack thereof.

The Oracle, Im not trying to be. Like I said, I'm a regular here and not in all my years have I seen such fanatics as I have with Godsmack and H.I.M. Both are extremely narrow-minded people and that feel that if the album didn't get a very high score then the site sucks and reviewer knows nothing. That kind of attitude just drives me crazy.
People need to realize that its "just a band", not a way of life. Lets face it bands make so so,average and even bad albums at times. Hell, she gave the album a 3.5 out of 5. People need to realize, that is basically a 7 out of 10 and not bad at all.
What people also need to realize is that albums are/can like movies. Just because your a fan of a particular series/bands work does not mean they can't make something that not everyone is going to enjoy. It happens and you guys need to understand that.
Its like those Star Wars fanatics that (all of us laugh at) wear costumes, talk about how anything other than Star Wars is garbage and if anyone talks negatively about it then you know nothing. It's a retarded mindset!
I am more than sure we all look at them and say what close-minded idiots.
Well, whats the difference when someone feels the same way about a band and/or cd? When they go on these tirades and it makes them look stupid. At least you seem to have a "normal" gene in your body.

Steve, thanks for the support man…we really do appreciate it! As far as the review, we knew going into it that it would touch a nerve one way or another, and it did. So being completely honest, this was actually expected. You just cant make everyone happy, its just a fact.
I will say this to all the Godsmack fans around the world. The album was listened to (thoroughly) numerous times and an opinion was formed on that. Their was no "short changing" the band OR the album in any possible way.
I gave Jennifer the opportunity to review The Oracle due to the fact that she has been a fan since their independent release, in the fan club (yes folks, she was) and has traveled thousands of miles to see them live numerous times. She has a vast knowledge of both the band AND their catalog. She did a fantastic job and I'm glad that I gave her the opportunity.

Why is it so hard for people to grasp the fact that we get full albums from the labels themselves prior to release date for review? The beauty of this simple concept is to try and provide people with useful insight on an album so that they know what to expect when they decide to purchase it.

I have been deaf to the unrelenting, bad-ass, life altering metal they have been offering up over the last ten years and I am sorry. Godsmack IS the one, the only, truly talented and kick ass band of all time. I’m going to the gym now and watch UFC, and everyone that doesn’t agree with me are just fags anyways which loosely means they know nothing of music and should stop writing reviews. I’m right, you’re all wrong and that’s all there is.
Of course that’s all hypothetical assuming anyone here, in their angry, fanatical rants of defense had any valid points to make. We’re Fags? We’re Stupid? Maybe represent your case with a little subtlety and a lot less moronic hostility and you might get somewhere. Until then, by all means commence with calling me and the rest of our staff fags because your holy Godsmack released another stale, steroid driven, pile of nonsense that we were too educated to appreciate.

I read through that Take One Car review and the comments as well. Even one of their musicians left a comment telling people to remember that it's a REVIEW. It's amazing how offended some people get when you personally dislike something that they adore. Those are the same people that call you a complete idiot for voting for a certain president or tell you that you're clothing choice is terrible. The same people that dictate their opinion to everyone around them as if its factual information and therefore everyone else should follow it without question.
Ignorance is bliss.

Honestly couldn't get into Godsmack when the numetal scene started to expanded a while ago and still can't listen to them today. Its a vocal and music style I can't relate to. No rating here just saying…

I would say I'm a pretty big Godsmack fan having liked them since the self-titled debut and having bought every album the day of release. Seen them 6 or so times live. Saying all of that…
I don't understand why people get so defensive when someone bashes Godsmack. I'm a musician myself so i KNOW how easy some of the riffs and songs are. First song I ever learned was a Godsmack song. If your taste primarily rests on sheer musicianship being displayed, lol your gonna hate Godsmack. Its hard rock. Its not metal. Its just simple rock and roll and Godsmack has carved their niche.
I thought the reviewer was honest. End of story. I would have liked more of her opinions listed but I understand she can't type an EPIC everytime a CD is reviewed.
One comment that bothered me though is someone questioning their muscianship. Just because their not shreding doesn't mean their terrible musicians. Bootsy Collins or BB King never hurried a note in their life. Slow but soulful. I know Godsmack doesn't equal Bootsy or BB but you get my point.

the difference between myself and others is that i understand this is absolutely opinionated… i enjoy some good metal while i also have a soft side for some trash metal, the sucker in me. i really like godsmacks first album and their live performance prior to IV was incredible, but i made myself enjoy IV and i cant see myself enjoying this album too much. although i have doubt, i will probably give it a try for sake of hearing new music. if necessary, i can always go back to ride the lightning and dream of metallica getting back together.

I actually like the old Godsmack stuff, so I will probably like this one. I have no beef with your review. I think it's great that you guys are objective, and don't let the band's popularity completely sway your opinions. I actually think a 3.5 isn't bad.

Its a fair review, every one is entitled to their opinion. I am a fan of Godsmack.. but i'm not gonna sit here and bash the reviewer.. every band gets reviews like this once or twice at least. It's something that some people just don't understand, EVERY BAND has their committed following and THERE WILL be people like LOL.. I think this was a well put review..
Only thing i can't stand are people that bash SO hard that they resort to calling ANY band or artist names.. I mean really, how grown up is that?!

I have to agree with the reviewer. As a long time Godsmack fan, I am disappointed. There really didn't break any new ground with this album. Nothing stood out to me. It all sounds the same. Really sounded like IV. I know the were trying to sound heavier and less bluesy, but all I heard was blues. Maybe my taste in music has gotten harder and Godsmack really hasn't changed. Now I am listening to more Amon Amarth, Opeth, and Eluveitie.. so Godsmack def doesn't sound death metalish. Even my Windows Media Player categorizes them as "rock" and not metal. If I listen to this album some more, it might grow on me…but there's no originality. At least in IV, they had the female singing with Sully..that sounded cool. Maybe I am too brutal for them now. BTW, if I get some asshole saying I don't know what I am talking about, I've been to almost 10 shows and even meet Godsmack in a strip club after a show and hung out with them. I know this band well. I can officially say they r a good rock band…but NOT a metal band.

Gunslinger, its about having fun. If you take the time and read some reviews you will notice that quite a few have humor thrown into them. It keeps things fresh and makes for entertaining reads. The mere fact that you are turned off is ridiculous. Go read some boring site then. See ya!
[Reply to this comment]

Hey Gunslinger thanks for taking the time to let us know how you feel. First off, let me start by saying that we all work very hard at TNR to try and bring you the freshest reviews, news, album streams, etc. and I believe we do a great job at that. With that being said, I will not tolerate certain things and one of them being trolling. All of our reviewers/reviews are up for criticism and debate, just be constructive about it. Coming on here and trying to demoralize someone JUST because they may not like a particular band’s album is ludicrous. We have had others express their feelings about reviews before and not been as ridiculous as some.
There are numerous other sites out there that are filled to the brim with trolls like this and we will not be one of them. You just know that everytime you go read a review and or news, its going to be nothing but people talking trash. Things like that turn people off and when nothing is said, if makes the staff (of those sites) look like they don’t even care. Actually one of the original haters "LoL" has basically made good, been back numerous times and been very cool to say the least. People just need to realize there are just many ways to express those feelings other than pure venom and threats.
You used the term “unprofessional” in your comment and I would like to address that quickly as well. I feel that there is only so much "finger to the chest" someone can take before it’s time to stand up for yourself. We aren’t “stuffy music industry people” who decided one day to create a site, write reviews and post news. All of us bleed music and are very passionate about what we do. We are fans first and if that makes us “unprofessional” in your eyes then so be it.
Thanks again for checking us out…

I All in all the review is fine, for the average "rock" fan. But if you're an actual Godsmack fan, this review is not on point. The one thing she got right was the ability of Godsmack to create a "hook" so to speak. It's hard to listen to Cryin like a bitch or Love hate sex Pain without repeating it over and over in your head….
I I will say i've never been to this site. But I'm heading to Rockfest tomorrow night to see my favorite band – Godsmack – rock the GDamn house, that of course after rob zombie gets off stage. I've seen Godsmack 4 times live, this will be my fith. From the late 90's when they were younger, crazier, and all about rock and a crazy show to a great concert at Independence hall in 2007, washington DC, where no pit ever evolved and all basically stayed in their seats except to stand up for the ballads. I'm a godsmack junkie, i love every album, from the lyrics to the riffs, to the beats, whether i'm driving, working out, or home working on a six pack – their cumulation of music can hit on very many levels, and capture very many moods. Again this review is stale to say the least – but she makes some good points for the casual fan or those on the fence.
the immature banter among both fans and staff is stifiling at best….comments are usually left to fans. I can see the reviewer chiming in per her defense; but to have multiple writers stand up to defend thier site has formed all the opinion i need. it's kind of like going to buy a used car – the more the dealer (this site) talks about it, the bigger the b.s. story. If your reviews were solid, there would be nothing to say. Godsmack refers to silence often in their tracks – maybe the staff here should take heed and recognize SILENCE is a far more powerful element than useless running at the mouth – SO STFU and respect a band that's multi-platinum – and quit hating that they have the right formula to capture enough fans to stay on top again and again – from tracks in movies, video games, to my ipod – godsmack rocks – and mixing the UFC into their video for crying like a bitch is one of the best marketing venutres to date for the band…why? cause they both target the same audience and both are the best thing going this day and age – those of us 20-30 have heard godsmack and watched UFC for a decade and i hope theres another decade of both to follow ~
I commented cause i'm bored at work – LOL cracks me up – i like his loyalty – i'd join him in the pit anyday ~ your writers going toe to toe with the likes of a random guest says alot about the integrity of your site in a whole – it lowers the worth of what was said in the review IMO

So we are supposed to "STFU" because Godsmack are a multi-platinum artist huh? Yea, I don't think so. People come to The NewReview by THE THOUSANDS everyday because we DO NOT pull punches and play games with PLATINUM SELLING bands. Im sure that Godsmack tattoo right above your ass looks pretty……fanboy! Oh yea and you mention Rob Zombie too, boy his new album sucks major ass. If you like music for morons then I guess that’s why this guy loves it so much. Great job to everyone at TNR staff, much kudos!
I have been visiting sites for years and this is the only one that tells it like it is and does not play games. Its called passion douche-bag! Your passionate about a band, they are passionate about their work. Most sites say nothing at all and people quit commenting because they feel the writers do not care. Well they do here and I applaud them for it. Take a hike Cletus, you have some old Godsmack ass to kiss anyway.

first off your writer contradicts herself in her review…she starts by saying "she rarely has an interest in an album after just one listen…and The Oracle was no exception" this basically sets up the reader to think she listened to it once for review purposes only and – never listend to it again. but a couple paragraphs later shes stating "While the album didn’t interest me much initially, after a couple of listens, I would wake up with certain songs stuck in my head." SO WHICH IS IT? do we believe her opening statement – which basically sets the tone for the rest of the article…or what she said later – that she listened to it a couple of times? pick one or the other…as a writer and a proofreader or editor i would have picked up on that right away, as it's misleading, and jsut a way to cover all grounds – basically "i'd never listen to it, i did once, by way of a job" versus the hooks kepts playin in my head so i popped it in again for another play – which sets a totally different tone. but then again – you seem to be wanting to sit on the fence regarding the album.
i listen to godsmack daily – and now the Oracle is one of the best – but c'mon give the guys some cred – they pull an audience and have been headlining major tours for a decade from the likes of Ozzfest to Cruefest – mainy times outperforming the main attraction. I understand your job is to listen and review new tracks/music – but giving The Oracle a 3.5 out of 5 is almost there, but not quite. 4 or 4.5 would've satisifed me…..
my comment isn't about a personal attack on your writers or your site –
I don't expect you all to STFU – the buzz created by sites like yours is good for Godsmack! This is an album that is now Billboards no. 1, which surely means you gusy have swung and missed….hindsight is always 20/20 – but pride is mans feircest trait – and i doubt you'll put that pride aside and actually leave a comment elluding to that fact.

Steve i'm gonna call you No. 4 – just cause your comments are that of Doug no. 4 from multiplicity – effin retarded!! how bored are you to be sitting cruising review sites just to suck ass to some writers – i've never seen rob zombie, but am anticipating a good show. i'm a fan of his movies and earlier music/albums, haven't purchased anything recent.
to sit here and say godsmack sucks is narrowminded. it's apparent they don't suck, they appeal to a mass audience and if you don't like them great. don't call out the people who do. you're entitled to your opinion as is everyone else in this world for one reason and one reason only…..but i doubt you're smart enough to recognize that reason! my taste in music is very vast, and forming an opinion about someone just because they are godsmack fans speaks alot to your level of intelligence – i'd have to say its nil.
Yes i'm off to the concert in C.B. IA tomorrow – and any true fan is going to say that. Keeping it on topic – this review is written in a way to cover both ends of the spectrum – dislike and like – it's not very difinitive – that's all i'm sayin. Either you like it or you don't – it gives no potential new listeners real direction – which i think is the point of a review.
"Great Party Steve" No. 4 that is…….hahahaha!!

ccwhpwr,
First of all, I appreciate you visiting the site and taking the time to comment. But considering this is the only page of the site you've looked at tells me a lot about your intentions. You're here to stir things up. And because we care about what our visitors have to say and respond to their comments, you see it as an opportunity to argue. You're certainly not the first, and won't be the last. I would like to respectfully address several things you said.
"I’ve seen Godsmack 4 times live, this will be my fith….I’m a godsmack junkie, i love every album, from the lyrics to the riffs, to the beats, whether i’m driving, working out, or home working on a six pack – their cumulation of music can hit on very many levels…Again this review is stale to say the least – but she makes some good points for the casual fan or those on the fence."
I've seen Godsmack live six times. I met the guys. I interviewed them and wrote a review about the first show of the Faceless tour in Jacksonville, FL for their official fan club. So I would say I'm more than qualified to review their album. But the difference between me and you is the fact that I can step back and OBJECTIVELY listen to the album, without letting my personal feelings cloud my judgment. Since you "love every album", you're not able to give it an unbiased review. I'm sorry, but that's just a fact.
"comments are usually left to fans. I can see the reviewer chiming in per her defense; but to have multiple writers stand up to defend thier site has formed all the opinion i need."
You might be right when you say comments are usually left to fans. But it shouldn't be that way. That seems to be the case on music blogs/sites. People comment and the writers never respond. You know how that makes them look? Like they don't give a damn about what their visitors have to say. And that's not us. Take it or leave it.
"If your reviews were solid, there would be nothing to say. Godsmack refers to silence often in their tracks – maybe the staff here should take heed and recognize SILENCE is a far more powerful element than useless running at the mouth."
That's funny because you haven't read any other reviews here, and can't seem to take your own advice about silence. If someone says horrible things about your kids or family, are you just going to let them keep talking trash? No, you're going to stand up for them. Since when did being spineless become a requirement for writers?
And you like LOL's loyalty? Apparently you haven't read his last comment – "This may sound weird, but the more I read your reviews, and read your news, the more I appreciate the time you guys spend on keeping your website updated with the latest news and reviews. So. Friends?
" At least he was able to get beyond the fact that he disagreed with ONE review here.
"first off your writer contradicts herself in her review…"
Wow, no I absolutely did not. I basically said that I rarely ever like albums after I listen to them one time through, and I didn't like Godsmack's after I only listened once. But the more I listened, the more it grew on me. That's a simple concept to understand, is it not?
"as a writer and a proofreader or editor i would have picked up on that right away, as it’s misleading"
You're a writer/proofreader/editor? Do you commonly use "STFU" in your day-to-day? Given your comments I find it hard to believe, if I'm being honest.
"but c’mon give the guys some cred – they pull an audience and have been headlining major tours for a decade from the likes of Ozzfest to Cruefest"
Let me get this straight. We, as writers, are supposed to give Godsmack a higher rating than a band that not many people know about because they pull an audience? Are you being serious? All bands are on a level playing field which only adds to our credibility here, rather than deterring from it. Personally I don't care how awesome a band is live or how many fans they have. If you make a terrible album, then I'm going to say it's terrible. THAT, my friend, is credibility in its purest form.
Lastly, what so many people fail to understand is that a review is relative. Just because I gave it a 3.5 doesn't mean everyone should feel that way. But at the same time, just because you think it should be a 5, doesn't mean everyone should feel that way either. Just because you prefer coke over pepsi doesn't mean everyone should do the same.
I know you're going to have more to say. And I'm probably "being unprofessional" for posting this comment, but the staff here bleeds for this site, so don't expect us to stand by while you try to discredit us. We're not that kind of site.

ccwhrpwr, we are brothers-in-Smack so I can understand why you are being so defensive. For us (Godsmack fans), Godsmack are:
- The best band EVER!
- The greatest band of all-time!
- The true definition of AWESOMENESS!
and the list goes on and on. However bro, you can't expect everyone to see Godsmack the same way we do, nor agree with anything we say. We are entitled to our own opinions, but we don't have the right force our opinions on others. You disagree with the reviewer? Not a big deal. Just smile and nod.
I used to one of the original haters (as Lee described me lol.), but like Jen said, I was able to get beyond the fact that I disagreed with one review. I don't even think about it. Turn the page my brother-in-Smack, it doesn't worth all the time you spend on your comments. The guys are not gonna edit their reviews, nor delete them, yet they are giving their readers the ability to exercise their freedom of speech by allowing them to comment on the reviews, that shows how open-minded these guys are.
With all that being mentioned, I really hope you take my advice, and realize that their review won't make any difference (with all respect to TNR staff members). Godsmack will continue selling albums as long as they have fans like us.
Just to make things clear, I've been checking the other reviews, and I can't deny that Jen gave the album one of the highest ratings so far. I've stumbled on other sites that gave The Oracle 2 out of 5. So look at the bright side of Jen's review. 3.5 out of 5 is so good compared to other reviews. Sure I disagree with some of the stuff she mentioned in her review, but life goes on my friend.
As long as the fans are enjoying The Oracle, that's all what matters.
I admit that I feel ashamed of all the bad comments I wrote, took one of Godsmack fans name (EternalLies) (Read the very first comment), said bad things about Jen, trashed Lee and the other guys. So I'm here to apologize again and make sure that everything is cool between us. Please accept my apology guys. :}

I came back to revisit this site because…..
Godsmack has a new forum moderator. This moderator is some trick Sully banged years ago. She took over Another Animal, WerdWear, Godsmack and Godsmacks Facebook, Godsmacks myspace, and Godsmacks Twitter. And FYI…she ran WerdWear into the ground. After the site was hacked she posted pictures of the hacker on the site and other personal info. Not cool. Then the band decides to hire her to run the Godsmack message boards. This stalker bitch has banned all the 'old time' members and you now need to be 'approved' before being allowed to join the MB. And she's damn selective about who she lets in. You have to go through this chic before you are allowed remotely close to the band. If THAT weren't enough all the members of the message boards have contacted management, sent letters, petitions, etc to try and resolve this conflict. To no avail.
So while Godsmack definitely had a strong following before, they have blown off many of their fans now. And it isn't like they aren't aware. They are. Apparently they just don't care that some stalker bitch has taken over their internet presence and is turning fans away because she was good on her knees.
She has even posted a letter 'to the fans' from Sully about his 'new solo album' Avalon. The letter itself comes off like begging the fans to buy it and is quoted to be 'the best work Sully has ever done and he is most proud of it over anything else he's ever done'. It is obviously not written by Sully (unless he's gay) and he obviously couldn't be bothered to write his own letter, this bitch is now speaking for him too. It's sad because I know that Shannon and Robbie love the fans, too bad they don't get a say-so.
So all you Godsmack fans that are devoted, adoring, and loyal to the band…..good luck with that! They could give two shits about you.

I found this site when searching for a review on The Oracle, after visiting the Wikipedia page on Godsmack and realising they had a new album out which I had missed. I won’t be back. While the review was informative and impartial or “fair” in its content – the comments just destroyed it.
With most sites I visit, the comments are almost always worth more to me than the actual review. But here, It’s like primary school. As a site, your writers should never directly get involved in trolling, or possibly be banned from posting in the comments section at all. You should have one neutral “community relations” person to handle that.
I don’t even know why I am writing this comment as it wont be published. btw; large scale comercial site using wordpress is not good. So is RedHead Design claiming “Designed & Developed by …” since you are using open source platform and code NOT developed by them.
Jock (yes I am scottish- no ginger here though) suggests that you all grow up. Big time.

Cool story bro. You received your attention. We run things the way we would like around here and if that involves direct communication with readers then so be it. A ‘neutral “community relations” person’ sounds really exciting. You know, because the last thing we’d want to do is entertain the opinions of our readers.
Our responses may not be the most professional or politically correct, but having an open line of communication with our readers is not something we’re looking at crippling anytime soon. I would tell you to move on if you didn’t like it, but you seem to have your mind made up already.

I won’t address the whole “writers making comments” issue because we’ve done that plenty of times. But I will address your ill-informed statement about WordPress and the work I’ve done with it here. Since you’re obviously not aware of the popularity and flexible nature of WordPress, I’m sure you have no clue that some of the biggest websites/companies in the world use it such as Mashable, the NFL, the Library of Congress, MTV, TechCrunch, Playstation, Yahoo, Flickr, etc. Here are just a few sites that use it-
http://mashable.com/
http://blogs.nfl.com/
http://blogs.loc.gov/loc/
http://majornelson.com/
http://techcrunch.com/
http://newsroom.mtv.com/
http://blog.us.playstation.com/
http://ycorpblog.com/
http://blog.mozilla.com/
http://blog.flickr.net/
http://www.xxlmag.com/
http://blogs.blackberry.com/
Furthermore, most hard rock and metal sites run on WordPress as well. Secondly, I did in fact do all the design and development work you see here. It runs on WordPress, but that’s it. Clearly you don’t have a good understanding of open source development.
And thanks for providing a link to your site. It was incredibly informative. Obviously you’ve spent a lot of time on it. Thanks for the comment.

Basically, Oracle gets a 3.5/5 because it doesn’t offer anything that the previous albums weren’t already packed with. Play it as ambient music alongside any of their previous albums and you’d rarely notice any differences in the style.
And before you chock me up as a Gaga fanatic, you ought to know that I much prefer a range between old Metallica and Amon Amarth- guess that makes me a metalhead. Even so, Surtur Rising beats the pants off this rerun any day of the week. Seems to me that Godsmack is one of the pop/rock alternatives for wanna be individualists that end up in dance clubs at the end of the night. Don’t get me wrong, they were the bee’s knees when I was in sixth grade… but I moved on – while they didn’t.
