For Today – Breaker

For Today

The writers for TNR are always encountering critics. Whether it was a sloppily written review, not giving a band a high enough score, or just not liking the same music, there will always be those that want to argue and disagree with the review. These critics use a whole host of strategies in their assault on our comment boards. One has only to glance at the thread to see that some resort to base threats. Whereas others claim that we clearly “aren’t fans.” But one common point of attack is the fact that our reviews are “biased.”

Well, let me put it out in the open so their will be no confusion, I hated . As a fellow Christian I always respected their lyrics and message but you would never catch me listening to them. They were some of the most untalented and boring musicians I had ever heard. Their first album, Ekklesia, (which is the Greek word used in the Bible for Church) was absolutely horrific. Not a single thing attracted me. The breakdowns were boring, the vocals monotonous, the drummer didn’t seem to have the ability to play anything even remotely of interest and the guitars were uninspired at best. Their second album, Portraits, was much better but still nothing I would ever want to listen to.

All that being said, ’s third release, Breaker, is one of the best releases of 2010. As the first track began playing I instantly knew this was different. The album has four “spoken word” poetry sections scattered throughout the album. At first they turned me off from the album but as I began to listen to it more I realized that, not only were they quite impressive lyrically, they really add to the ambiance and message of the album. Another thing to mention is that is, like most Facedown bands, in-your-face Christian. The message of this album is a triumphant Christian living for Christ. So, just like my review I’ll post this little disclaimer: if you can’t be open minded about their religious persuasion, you will NOT be able to listen to .

This album will be the anthem for those with broken dreams, the lost and hopeless, the abused and the fatherless. This album speaks constantly of battle, triumph, and vindication. And boy does it bring the heavy. Breakdowns are the name of the game for this Iowa quintet. They throw in the occasional sweep to break up the chugs but just by sheer tonnage this album is more slow than technical. 808s abound as they punctuate many a breakdown’s beginning with an intense bass drop. Some of the bass drops were so large they threatened to blow out my car’s tiny speakers. The album also features a few “clean” choruses that really add to what is a relatively one dimensional album. But even with their reliance on breakdowns has still written an album that will pull you in. The spoken poetry tells a personal story of victory while the musical songs tell more general stories of conquest and love.

The album has an excellent pacing to it. It begins with poetry that transfers into an absolutely brutal song (with an abundance of 808) aptly named “Devastator.” After a few songs they break the monotony with more poetry, what is arguably one of the best tracks on the album, “Seraphim.” This track features a sick little voice modulation at the beginning of the mid-track breakdown. It’s a little thing but is just one of many little things that enhance the album. The song also features sung/yelled choruses that stand in stark contrast to the rest of the album’s vocals. The album outro begins with more poetry and then transfers into a female chorus. It is an absolutely beautiful ending to the album and one of the best I have heard in a long time.

has not redefined their genre, nor have they crafted an album full of originality and technical skill. What they have made however, is an album full of hope and vibrant life. This album grabs you with its brutality and keeps you hooked with its message. The pure transformation I have seen through their albums has been for the best, and Breaker has thoroughly changed my previous opinion of . I’m glad to say it is now one of my favorite releases of 2010 thus far. For all those who love a good bone crunching breakdown and some hand raising lyrics, this is the album for you.

Words cannot express how much I love this album. Glad you wrote this review because I never would've been able to put my thoughts into words. Good review, Luke.

Anyone who has doubts about this album – don't. It is crushing in every sense of the word. For Today's best album to date!

Laughing because someone would have to be out of their mind to think we'd ruin our relationship with a label by leaking one of their albums before release date. Not being a jerk about it, but that's not how we operate.

A while back, I heard For Today's other stuff and needless to say, I wasn't very impressed. To be honest, I pretty much hated their music.
Originally, I thought I'd just avoid anything to do with their future music (seeing as I'm a pretty ignorant person at the best of times) but you've definitely changed my mind. It's pretty remarkable if a band has been able to improve as much as you seem to suggest. You do make a convincing argument after all. :)

Has the album been officially released yet?

I never got into Portraits that much, but, I have to say this has become one of if not THE album of the year (so far) for me. For Today have cut the fat and made an album that is beautifully devastating.

While they do rely on breakdowns a lot, For Today have accomplished what A Plea For Purging accomplished with The Marriage of Heaven and Hell – they were able to wrap their matured songwriting in a irresistable atmosphere mainly accomplished thanks to the three spoken word interludes placed thoughtfully throughout the album. I would be lying if I said "The Breaker's Commission" wasn't one the most moving closing tracks I have heard in quite some time.

The music is definitely worth the score here. For Today has made me a fan.

I'm super psyched for this album! My only complaint (from what I've heard so far) is how slow the songs on the album are. Yes, they're methodical and brooding, but a little speed is necessary too.

I dunno, after the new Impending Doom album, every other band has a lot of work to keep up with them this year.

    I really like For Today.

The thing about Christian-influenced music and I is that I like it because it has a deeper meaning. That being said, I tried to find Christ in a time of depression, but I didn't find much solace and ended up dropping Christianity altogether. I think it's because I lacked certainty and didn't feel ready to put my faith in a higher being. I can appreciate the Bible's message of being a good person, but I don't want to believe in the being behind the message. I applaud those with the courage to do so though, and that's where I think Christian-influenced music really clicks with me.

I'm really looking forward to this release now that I know it'll squeeze my balls with a steel gauntlet and never let go.

Okay, I might be getting off subject but since it's something I feel strongly about, I'm willing to do so. :) Azriel, you mentioned you dropped Christianity because you lacked certainty, but that's why faith in Christ (or in anything) is called "faith" – faith means believing in something without proof. I fully understand where you're coming from…I was an atheist for a loooong time. In college I was a philosophy major so my brain taught me that anything that couldn't be logically explained couldn't be real. Long story short, my beliefs have greatly changed.

And since I already know you love Oh, Sleeper (as do I), I feel certain you'll love this album. :)

Okay, so I have been a fan of For Today since Ekklesia. I am not religious towards anything and I keep an open mind at all time. I never minded the lyrics until this CD. It's not that they are bad or anything, but I grew up in a town full of down-your-throat redneck baptists. I listened to this CD all the way through and I seriously felt like I was at a church sermon with them, and I thoroughly did not enjoy it. Sure For Today has sick breakdowns, and the occasional cool sweep riff, but it is difficult for me to listen to listen to a metal cd to stop every couple of songs to listen to a guy rap about how porn is bad.

I am sure this will hit some soft spots for a lot of people, but people who aren't interested in being converted or listen to music for deep, wholesome connections will have difficulty with popping Breaker into their stereos and listening to it all the way through.

Call me what you like, and tell me I speak blasphemy or whatever, but I have trouble enjoying Breaker because I feel like it's ministry and preachyness is its downfall. I am sure someone will say, "If you don't like it, don't listen to it", but forgive me for listening to a good band that I used to thoroughly enjoy. I gave it a chance, and I will still probably listen to a few singles, but I can't, in all honestly enjoy feeling like I am at church when I am jamming on my car ride to work.

    Hi David,
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I can definitely understand how the album could be polarizing. Honestly, if I wasn't Christian, I don't know that I could listen to the album either. With Mattie and the rest of For Today, their music is essentially their "ministry". It's what they feel they're called to do; their purpose in life, if you will. They make music knowing full well they are going to alienate some of their fans (such as yourself). It's unfortunate in a way, but it's a risk they're willing to take.

Thanks for being respectful with your comment, by the way. :)

That seems counterproductive to the goal of spreading the word.

Because even though they may alienate you from their music, they're hoping that possibly something else could reach out to you. Any person trying to spread the word is going to alienate a large population of people.

It's (kind of) the same as Rage Against the Machine with political lyrics. They write lyrics based on what they believe – whether it alienates listeners or not. All bands are guilty of it in one way or another.

My take on For Today's first two albums are that they are amazing live, but on CD they are merely OK. Since I only live an hour away from them, I've seen them live several times, and the way Maddie is on stage, you just loose yourself in the music. Breaker however is different, it has songs that will make more people listen to them, get them more known in the metal scene.

This album abuses the bass blast/boom effect. The first two albums were great, in my opinion, they showed some range guitar wise. The drummer isn't really that good, but the one song he seems to pull off is Never Lose Sight of Your Goals. This album has small creative riffs which can give the feeling of them "stepping up their game." The album itself gives you a ridiculous amounts of breakdowns. I feel as if they really dumbed it down to your average hardcore fan. This album is only good in the sense of I can dance to it, yet they left out the two-step beats that has made them so catchy in the first two albums. I say this as a dude who enjoys the hardcore scene, who enjoys for today, who enjoys creativitiy, they shouldn't have rolled out this ablum so quickly. They should have processed it and let it sit for a bit. For Today is losing its bite.

First of all…I read just about all of the Avenged Sevenfold comments and holy crap wow haha. This site gets so many haters sometimes (as well as band member hate, cough The Body cough) and you guys always take it in stride and hold on to your opinions. I think it makes them more pissed how civil you guys try to be with responses. This site is awesome and have introduced me to a lot more awesome metal bands.

I'm a smidge late to this but there's an explanation:

I'm going to end up seeing them in February (rock yourself to sleep tour) and I figured I'd try them out. They. Are. Awesome. For one, I love breakdowns, if they don't go on endlessly (COUGH Devil sold his soul COUGH) and the breakdowns throughout all three albums are awesome. While I agree a band should not rely solely on them, it's hard to ignore how good the ones by For Today are, and I don't think they rely solely on them. Also some of the screamed words just sounds great, (Joel The Watchman, Devastator) their injection of soft lyrics sometimes mixed with heavy is always placed really well (Never lose site of the goals) the drumming is well done and awesome catchy as hell guitar riffs. Definitely makes me want to rock out wherever I am.

I'm definitely going to be purchasing this and the previous albums, because from what I've heard so far (most of the songs at least once), it's awesome. About religion, I'm…well I'm supposed to be Catholic…although it's because my parents are (went to CCD, communion the whole bit) and the last few years I've been questioning my religious beliefs a lot, actually I've been doing it since like high school) That said Demon Hunter is one of my favorite metal bands, along with some other metal bands. I also listen to non-metal Christian (Skillet, Thousand Foot Krutch, etc.) and I'm not saying I'm in love with the lyrics and I'm now ready to be a Christian but as long as lyrics flow well and sound awesome I'm okay with it, even if it is based on religion

As a whole though the lyrics for a lot of the songs I've heard by them are really good IMO so I'm okay with it. I don;t think they or a lot of other Christian bands are trying to shove religion down your throat, and I'm sure, as Demon Hunter has said for instance, that they have a lot of non-Christian listeners and probably don't care who likes them, as long as they like what they put out.

But I'm definitely digging this band, and I'm excited to see them live now.

We can't do it without people like you.

Second, lucky! I still haven't managed to see them.

I'm really glad you dig em regardless of their religious content. Rock out to them for me :)

Also I love Demon Hunter and some old school TFK.

TFK is one of my most scrobbled bands on my last.fm lol

Woo other TFK/Demon Hunter fans! TFK has changed but I think they still sound really good so I like all their stuff. Personally I like their newer stuff more tan the old though.

Very nice review by the way, the album is indeed pretty awesome. I like can't get over how awesome every single breakdown is haha, on this album and the previous 2.

And I'll always have a spot for Demon Hunter and will probably always like their music, they are the band that got me into metal, a genre I used to despise.

You're not the only person that feels that way. :) I personally love For Today's message, but there are a lot of people that don't and that's understandable. Honestly though, I don't think you can expect a lighter message from For Today (and Mattie) any time soon.

Heya Jen thanks for the reply. Ands its not that im against For Today or their messege at all. Again im actually growing on the band. I'm very religious myself and am open to all kinds of metal. Its how i can jump from like Decide or Behemoth to Becoming the Archetype and AILD. I just prefer if they made their lyrics more open to interpretation, and not all "Praise Jesus"y stuff

Because dont get me wrong I love Christian Metal like AILD, Becoming the Archetype, Demon Hunter, In The Midst of Lions and War of Ages…and i dont count religious or spiritual views of a band against them ever. But This band is almost border line "too" in your face christian. I feel like if they stop being so In your face about stuff their wouldnt be as many arguements over religon

I absolutely love For Today. If you are a Christian and weren't impressed with their older albums like Portraits, you should really listen to the lyrics. They get me so hyped up for God and make me want to spread his word. I get chills every time I listen to them.

I’m a bit behind the times with this one. I only just stumbled upon this review a week or two ago and prior to that, had no interest in For Today. Now, I have not only bough the album on the strength of this positive review, but it’s a new favourite. Perfect timing too, seeing as though their new album will be out soon. I hear a Gideon-ish element in the vocals (that is that I listened to Gideon before this, even though this was first), which I like. Looking forward to having my face melted frequently by this one…

Glad you liked it man! Like you, I had absolutely no interest in these guys before this album but, as you can tell, I’m a convert. Thanks for reading and I’m glad you loved it. We’ll be reviewing their upcoming album as well.

P.S. I reviewed Gideon’s debut if you are interested in reading that as well. :P
